I was moving a client’s site from an old host to an up-to-date WordPress install on Hostgator and I hit the upload limit. I got a “PHP memory limit error“. These errors occur when PHP tries to process a large database record, or when importing or exporting a database. I tried to increase the upload size with the .htaccess file, but it didn’t seem to work for me. We need to check the maximum memory limit and increase it if possible.
- Log into your Hostgator Control Panel, and under the “Software/Services” tab and click on “php.ini QuickConfig”.
- Search for the following variables and change them to these values if they differ:
- max_execution_time = 30
- memory_limit = 64M
- upload_max_filesize = 64M
- post_max_sixe = 20
If these limits are still insufficient, you will need to upgrade to a VPS plan or dedicated server in order to increase your memory and file limits.
